I started out with an old cabinet door if found at a thrift store. I painted it red and antiqued it a bit.
Next, I cut out a piece of vinyl chalkboard the size I needed and put it on the cabinet door.
Then I round a design I wanted to use and enlarged the image. I have a tutorial HERE on how I make my chalkboard art if you are interested.
I think I turned out to be a fun, yet different 4th of July project!

I love this! And I had to smile when I saw it. Each Monday, I post a vintage Workbasket embroidery pattern on my site and the pattern you used for your sign is the same vintage pattern that I shared on the 4th of July last year. I've always said that those patterns could be used for more than just embroidery. :)
