Upcycled Cabinet door

I have been itching to make something out of some craft items I picked up thrifting around.

I started out with a cabinet door, some wood medallions and a couple of round medallions.

I glued the wood medallion to the cabinet door.

Withe the medallion pieces I painted them separately.

I painted them a silvery gray color to start.

After they that dried, I painted over it with an Heirloom white color

I then sanded the pieces some to antique it a bit.

The gray silver color starts to show through.

Lastly, I glued the pieces together.

I really like how they turned out.  They each look different!

Shopkins Pinata

My daughter had her birthday this weekend, and we have a family tradition of having a pinata at the party, so this year I made her a shopkins pinata!

Pinata

I started out with some oatmeal containers and some cardboard.

I couldn't find the right size container for the bottom layers, so I made it out of cardboard.  I cut out 2 circles and cut some other cardboard to fit around it.

Next, I glued all the parts together and taped the lipstick part to the top of the container.

Now it is time to mix the paper mache paste.

This is what you will need:
Flour
Water
Cinnamon (optional)

Mix the water and flour together in a 2 to 1 ratio.  For example, mix 1 cup flour with 2 cups water.  I use warm water because I like it better.  I also add a little bit of cinnamon to the mix.  I do not like the smell of the water and flour mix  -  cinnamon makes is so much more pleasant!
I use my cheap project mixer to mix the lumps out.

Now for the fun part - goooooooey paper mache.

First take some newspaper and rip it into 2 - 3 inch strips.

Next, dip the newspaper strips in the paste and run it through your fingers to get most of the excess paste off.

Then lay the paper strips on the pinata.

I usually do 2 to 3 layers of newspaper and then add another layer of paper that is the same color you want the pinata.

Then, paint the pinata.

Next, cut 3/4 inch slits about 1/2 inch apart on a streamer.  Then, wrap the streamer around the pinata and glue it down.

Lastly, I added the shopkins face!

Welcome Sign

I have been wanting to make a new welcome sign, and I finally finished it!

I started out with a plain unfinished cabinet door.

I glued on a wood embellishment and painted the whole project silver/gray.

Then, I painted over the silver with and Heirloom white paint

I then sanded it a bit here and there to give it a little of an antique look.

For the letters - I cut some old cedar fence boards to the size I wanted.

Then, I cut out some stencils with my cricut (any stencil will work).

I painted the letters.

Lastly, I glued the letters to the cabinet door.

Independence Hall

I can't believe the 4th of July will soon be here.  I wanted to make some fun decor, but I wanted something a little different than red, white & blue, so I had some fun and came up with this fun project!

Independence

I started out with an old cabinet door if found at a thrift store.  I painted it red and antiqued it a bit.

Next, I cut out a piece of vinyl chalkboard the size I needed and put it on the cabinet door.

Then I round a design I wanted to use and enlarged the image.  I have a tutorial HERE on how I make my chalkboard art if you are interested.

I think I turned out to be a fun, yet different 4th of July project!

Nerf Pinata

My twin boys wanted a nerf party for their birthday this year, and we have a tradition of having a pinata as part of the celebration, so I got busy and made one.

Nerf

I started out with a circle pattern that I traced twice on a heavy piece of cardboard and cut out.  You can used whatever design you want.

Then cut some 3 inch strips of cardboard that will be used to go around the pattern

Next, glue the cardboard strips around the outside of the pattern, leaving a 2 - 3 inch gap in the perimeter so you have a place to put in the candy!

Use part of one of the cardboard strips to make a circle, triangle, or whatever shape you want.  You are going to glue this in the middle of the inside of the cardboard shape.  This makes the pinata sturdy, so when you add the wet paper mache, the pinata will not become concave when it drys.

Lastly, glue on the some circles and a logo.
